What It’s Like To Be An Aquarius

Weird. Weird as fuck. But when I say “weird”, I mean captivating. What goes on upstairs is like fourth of July fireworks, at all times. There’s always a day dream to get lost in or a world problem waiting to be solved.

Aquarians are visionaries, progressive souls who love to spend time thinking about how things can be better. I know myself to be at times shy or quiet; yet eccentric and energetic at others. We are deep thinkers and highly intellectual people who love helping others. We value our ability to hold conversation and get along with any who dares to engage in conversation with us. We are able to see without prejudice, on both sides, which makes us people who can easily solve problems.

I have always been able to adapt to the energy that surrounds me yet I have a deep seated need for alone time to be with my thoughts. I often take alone time too far and end up isolated, lost in thought.

I share this sign with many greats: Oprah, Ellen, Galileo, Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin, Michael Jordan, Rosa Parks, Justin Timberlake, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bob Marley, Wayne Gretzky, Mozart, Shakira, Charles Lindbergh, Ed Sheeran, Babe Ruth, Neymar, Dr.Dre, Paris Hilton, FDR & Kim Jong-Il…to name a few ;)

Visionaries. Great thinkers. Philanthropists. Creatives. To say the very least.

This is a good time to interject my own narrative and admit that although I find it good fun to mellow in the self confirming bias of astrology, I don’t use the zodiac as a true reflection of who I am, or who I ought to be. I wish it were real, but I simply don’t believe it to be rooted in actual science. Having said that, there’s also nothing wrong with a little fun especially if it’ll make me a better problem solver, visionary or creative as many Aquarians (coincidentally or not) happen to be.

We’ve been described as progressive, independent, intellectual, original, independent, humanitarian and for having the affinity for abstract thought.

Kids called me weird all my life. For my taste in fashion, music and for blurting out whatever strange thought was percolating in my head, irrefutably ruining most group social interactions with my oddness. This blessing soon became a curse, as I found myself on the wrong side of most debates and often outcast or even abandoned due to my standoffish nature. I have always kept many of my thoughts to myself and often to my demise; you simply can’t hold that much in and expect your girlfriend to stick around while you ponder endlessly.

Perhaps the greatest demise to an Aquarian is the lack in natural ability to be vulnerable. It takes me a GREAT deal of time to develop trust with others and let them “in”. Aquarius-born have a reputation for being cold and insensitive persons, but this is just ourdefence mechanism against premature intimacy. I need to learn to trust others (which often takes longer than most people, or girlfriends are willing to spend to stick around). This of course, can be easily explained by other psychological ideas and be found rooted in my childhood trauma’s, however, it does fit the stereotype too.

One thing I do know to be true based on my limited field research (insert sarcastic tone here) is that we are quickly tuned out at the first sign of a boring conversation. If there is no mental stimulation I become quickly disengaged, uninterested and will happily return to my mind’s thoughts… a place as we now know…always interesting.

I love people. I fervently support “power to the people,” aspiring to change the world through radical social progress. Every Aquarian is a rebel at heart: despises authority and anything that represents conventionality. The biggest kink to my oxygen tube is the feeling that I’ve been limited or constrained. Because of my desire for freedom and equality for all, I will always strive to ensure freedom of speech and movement. I have never performed well at any job that has outdated, arbitrary rules — makes me feel like I’m inside a prison. I thrive in roles where I can be autonomous, creative and open to taking intellectual and creative risks.

Aquarius the “water bearer” can become so focused on implementing widespread reform that they neglect their family and friends, gaining a reputation for being aloof and distant in relationships. Boy, ain’t that the truth! Friends of an Aquarius should possess these three qualities: creativity, intellect and integrity. When it comes to family, my expectations are nothing less. Although I have a sense of duty to relatives, they will not maintain close ties if the same expectations as in friendship are not fulfilled. This may come off as cold and distant but it’s also rooted in aligning ourselves with truth and integrity giving no special treatments who share our blood, zip code or nationality. We are truly the lovers of people and want to show the world the power of the mind. By implementing our ideas, we get a chance to show the world how it can be improved, changed, upgraded.

I love my sign. I love that before I read into any astrology I fit into many of the stereotypical adjectives for an Aquarius. I love that although I know many of this is self serving, in good fun and not rooted in empirical science…it is me. We are weird, we are hard to hold onto and we are as aloof as the definition of the word itself.

If you find yourself working with an Aquarian, dating an Aquarian or friends with an Aquarian…deploy patience, allow them to engage in conversation with you and let them be who they are — for what you will receive in return will be nothing short of fireworks like on the fourth of July.

It’s magic.
